First aid training has become a permanent feature in the education of young children. The International Montessori Academy also implements classes to help in difficult and emergency situations. Reality shows that a properly trained young person, can also save the lives of adults. And it certainly carries the right attitudes and social sensitivity into adult life.
On Thursday, we hosted Paramedicus, a virtual hero created by 4 HELP VR and real-life pre-medical first aid instructors.
We found out that before the rescue team arrives on the scene, a number of simple actions can be performed that significantly increase the chance of survival. Actions that improve the safety and comfort of the victim. And you don't need a lot of strength or advanced equipment to do this. We know how to check breathing and place the victim in the lateral position, we have learned what an AED defibrillator is and where to find one in public spaces. We can handle choking and bandaging.
We were impressed with the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training using VR technology. We practised on Laerdal's well-known and popular phantom - Little Anne. Little Anne is now about 60 years old and is probably the most kissed face in the world! The phantoms used for our training underwent a special modification and were equipped with sensors, VR instrumentation and a special app. After putting on the goggles, we went into a virtual world simulating a real event.
We secured the scene of the accident, notified the emergency services, checked the basic operations, performed CPR and used the AED defibrillator. In all this we were assisted by Paramedicus, the virtual hero. He made the whole process intuitive and at the end presented us with statistics on the effectiveness of the actions carried out.
Such training is much more than practising on a "spring puppet". It is an excellent implementation of new technology in the service of science. See Paramedicus and our students in action!
